  David Amess MP met with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) at a parliamentary reception where it launched its new eye health campaign Save our Sight (SOS).

There are around two million people in the UK with sight problems and the number of people at risk of the main causes of blindness - cataract, glaucoma, wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease is set to increase by up to 25 per cent in the decade leading up to 2020.

 David Amess MP and the Rt Hon Mark Francois played host last night to friends, family, colleagues and even the Prime Minister at an event to mark the 1992 General Election Victory in Basildon. Starting in the prestigious Boothroyd Room, guests were treated to a few warm words from the Prime Minister, who commented on Mr Amess’ ‘eternal youth’ and recalled his memories of that election at Conservative Central Headquarters.

 Yesterday saw an historic state opening of Parliament. After a the longest sitting for over a hundred years, Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, delivered her customary speech to both Houses. She outlined the Government’s forthcoming legislative programme, which demonstrated commitment to economic recovery, support for families and key changes to the law to deal with terrorism and organised crime.

 David Amess, MP for Southend West, bowled the first bowl of the season in Southend this weekend. Mr Amess visited Eastwood Park Bowls Club and Chlkwell Bowling Club. He said “I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits today and would like to wish bowlers in Southend a very successful season”.
