 With the historic Diamond Jubilee celebrations fast approaching, Southend has pulled out all the stops to mark her Majesty’s 60th year on the throne with a plethora of street parties. Around 50 parties have been planned in the constituency and local MP David Amess is going to attempt to visit as many as possible in order to convey his support for the occasion.

  David Amess MP marked the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by visiting numerous street parties in Southend West. Along with new mayor Sally Carr, Mr Amess joined the party goers in paying tribute to Her Majesty and revelled in the patriotic celebrations, admiring the effort to which many constituents had gone in order to make the occasion special! Each street party was also presented with a special Diamond Jubilee Certificate to mark the occasion.

The former Cluniac Priory has undergone a vast £1.6 million renovation thanks to a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will now offer a wide range of interactive facilities for visitors.

 David Amess MP visited Southend Pier’s newest arrival last Friday: the Cultural Centre. The 175 tonne structure has been lowered into place the previous day by crane after being sailed down the Thames via barge from Tilbury where it had been constructed.

 David Amess said in a statement today, following his successful election last night:

“I am honoured that my colleagues voted for me to serve on the backbench committee. I put my name forward following my decision not to continue as an Executive member of the 1922 Backbench Committee. This Committee has the power to determine what subjects backbenchers can debate on the 35 days put aside for backbench business in a parliamentary session. It is a very important Committee and I am delighted to serve on it.”
