Southend Book & Arts Fair showcased Southend’s talent last Saturday (20th October) and impressed local MP David Amess. The event was organised by a small group of local authors known mysteriously as ‘Writers Anonymous’. Local authors, poets, visual artists and even musicians were encouraged to present their work at the newly refurbished Victoria Centre.

The Southend Community-in-Harmony Partnership Big Event took place last Sunday with many different community groups in attendance. One group, SOS, were raising awareness of Domestic Abuse Projects; another was exhibiting the services they offer in Care of the Elderly. The Papworth Trust and the CSV also had brilliant and informative stands.

The new X30 Aircoach took off on Monday, with a helping hand from David Amess MP, Sally Carr, Mayor of Southend, Councillor Derek Jarvis, and Joan Mockford, Chairman of Rochford District Council. The bus service which serves Southend, Southend Airport and Stansted, has been redesigned to celebrate its service and the recent development of London Southend Airport.

 The Paralympic Flame was celebrated in style last Saturday, with a Sports Day and Fun Festival for the disabled at King John School. There were various events on show, including table tennis, fencing, archery, a live band, and an appearance from the Lions Club mascot, who were generous enough to put on the festivities.

 Christopher’s Cottage has been recognised as an ‘outstanding’ provider of, ‘education, care and skills’ by Ofsted. This official recognition of the great work that goes on at Christopher’s Cottage is fully deserved. Christopher’s Cottage is a school, as well as being a residential/respite care and sports hall facility for children and young adults with learning disabilities. Mr Amess visited Christopher’s Cottage to congratulate the staff.

The London 2012 Olympic Games have been the best Games ever. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the celebrations and thought the opening ceremony was spectacular. For me, the highlights of the ceremony were the arrival of Queen on parachute; Sir Steve Redgrave holding the torch; and the lighting of the Olympic Games Cauldron.

On Friday 3rd August, David Amess MP teamed up with The Big Lottery Fund, The Southend Fund and Essex Community Foundation to hold a special funding surgery. All constituents who were looking for financial assistance for community projects were invited to attend and they turned up in their droves to take advantage of this marvellous opportunity. In total, twenty four local organisations and charities attended and had the rare chance to get first hand advice from officials of all three funders.
