On Friday 27th July at 8.12 am, David will be joined by the Mayor of Southend and many local singers to celebrate the opening of the Olympic Games. As part of Martin Creed’s Work No. 1197, there will be a spectacular scene as many bells are rung at the end of Southend Pier and across the Southend area.

 David Amess MP was treated to a fine display of vocal talent at the Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir’s Annual Celebrity Concert. Performing alongside special guests, grammy award winning ‘The King’s Singers’ and the local voice of Elizabeth Dunlop, the choir performed a range of rousing numbers in aid of Southend Hospital Oncology Unit.

 David Amess MP was treated to some fine sailing on Saturday at the Annual Nore Race on the Thames Estuary. Hosted by Benfleet Yacht Club, the annual race starts and ends at Southend pier (where Mr Amess watched from), with the main action taking place out in the Thames Estuary. Having started in the 1920s, the race always attracts an array of participants in all classes, with this year’s entrants numbering up to 160 boats.

 David Amess MP joined thousands of constituents in lining the streets of Southend on Friday to welcome the Olympic Torch. Braving the awful weather, throngs of well wishers were treated to an amazing spectacle, including a choir of two thousand local school children singing an especially composed anthem as the torch arrived at the seafront.

  David Amess MP joined hundreds of mourners at the funeral of his old friend and colleague Ken Hargreaves. Over 400 people, including Ann Widdecombe, packed in to St Mary’s RC Church in Oswaldtwistle to pay their respects to the former MP for Hyndburn. Mr Amess, one of his closest friends, had the privilege of giving the first eulogy, in which he described Mr Hargreaves as a “political saint” who had led “very great life”.

  David Amess, MP for Southend West, attended Diabetes UK’s parliamentary reception for the launch of its State of the Nation 2012 report, which revealed that just half of people with diabetes are getting the basic checks and services they need to manage their condition. The charity is urging the Government to implement a national implementation plan for improving diabetes healthcare.
