David Amess MP attended an event at the Grosvenor Hotel in Westcliff-on-Sea to celebrate the achievements of the world renowned Dorton House School, a specialist school for Blind Children, and to protest against its proposed closure due to budget cuts. While the school is not in the constituency, it serves a large catchment area and pupils include local children.

Gareth Gates met with Members of Parliament at the Palace of Westminster on Wednesday 7th September to talk about the devastating effect that a communication difficulty has on the individual, their lives and the wider society.

The singer and West End star shared his personal experiences of living with a stammer as part of a wider event on communication disability hosted by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Centre for Social Justice.

This year’s event, organised by John and Linda Wilson, was held for the third time on the 12th and 13th of August with 479 visitors welcomed including exhibitors and children. Rev’d Diane Smith, who hosted the event, offered a prayer with exhibitors and helpers prior to the official opening by local MP David Amess. Invaluable support was given by members of the South East Essex Railway Society and Shoebury, Basildon, Chelmsford and Erith Model Railway Clubs.

The event was hosted at the Park Inn Palace Hotel and featured many well known names such as Digby Fairweather who performed with his famous ‘Half Dozen’ and Paul Jones, the lead singer of the popular 60s band Manfred Mann.

Attending an event held by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the umbrella organisation for the governing bodies of sport, Mr Amess spoke with England cricketers Mike Gatting and Angus Fraser, as well as club representatives, about how grassroots clubs are faring in the current economic climate.
