David Amess member of the Care and Support Alliance has welcomed today’s report from the Dilnot Commission as a ‘strong foundation on which to build reform of the social care system’. The report incorporates many of the Alliance’s core principles for reform, and the organisations have called upon the Government to act quickly and decisively to end the crisis in social care funding.

In a huge combined effort to encourage every child to enjoy reading, the public library network today launched The Summer Reading Challenge with an event at the House of Commons. Speakers included Nick Gibb, Minister for Schools, and author Michael Rosen. Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the Cultural Olympiad announced that the Challenge will be part of the London 2012 Festival.

Southend Vox put on a wonderful performance Saturday 2 July 2011 with the theme “Best of British”. The collection of songs were in aid of the British Heart Foundation. David Amess, Member of Parliament for Southend West joined many others to support the adult community choir of talented and enthusiastic members. Southend Vox’s dynamic mix of old and young British hits captivated the crowd and had them dancing and singing in their seats.

David Amess, Member of Parliament for Southend West attended the second musical extravaganza of Mencap Music School and Friends on Saturday 2 July. The performance was held at The Cliffs Pavilion providing a great venue for entertainment and showcasing of fantastic musical talent. The group’s initial performance back in July 2009 left the audience wanting more and it was evident at the end of the performance that the group did not disappoint in providing an exciting evening for all in attendance.

LOCOG director of sport Debbie Jevans believes yesterday’s mountain bike test event was “incredibly successful” but concedes that changes could be made to the course ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Julien Absalon and Catharine Pendrel secured victory in the men and women’s events respectively at the Hadleigh Farm Mountain Bike International Invitational, witnessed by nearly 5,000 spectators at the recently-completed Essex venue.

David Amess, MP for Southend West has pledged to take the fight for improved breast cancer services to Westminster, as he learnt on Monday, that UK breast cancer survival rates still lag behind those of other European countries. During the reception, hosted by Breakthrough Breast Cancer at the Houses of Parliament, Mr Amess committed to providing a voice for the nearly 48,000 UK women diagnosed each year with the disease.

David Amess MP for Southend West has pledged his support for a new report calling for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to be able to stay in work for longer, launched yesterday (20 June) at the House of Commons.

The report, entitled Ready to work: Meeting the employment and career aspirations of people with multiple sclerosis, published by The Work Foundation, highlights how the careers of people with MS are needlessly cut short by an average of 18 years.
