A story appeared about me in a national newspaper back in October concerning a Health Select Committee trip to the USA involving Virgin Atlantic, the contents of which were not accurate and also did not tell the full story. I am now in a position to reveal the following facts.

David Amess, Member of Parliament for Southend West, said today: “I was delighted to receive a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records this week to confirm that our gathering of centenarians was officially the largest ever. I am thrilled that the local centenarians who attended the tea party in Leigh-on-Sea have officially set this new world record.” 

The largest gathering of centenarians involved 28 participants at a tea party at Iveagh Hall, Leigh-on-Sea, on 25 September 2009.

The past year for all of us will have had some high points and some low points. Life itself is tough for most people and the challenge for us all is how to cope with it. I am more than aware, for instance, of those who have lost loved ones in all sorts of circumstances in the last twelve months. I feel for all those people in that situation and trust that they be given as much support as possible. On the bright side of course there will be any number celebrating the birth of babies, welcoming new life and the happiness which I hope that brings.

Southend West MP David Amess last night led an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on regeneration in Southend.  David was joined by James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East.  David raised many issues during the debate, including the local transport network, sporting and cultural facilities and the redevelopment of Southend pier.

Arriva Southern Counties have today launched a revised 18 bus route, which will connect Eastwood and Leigh-on-Sea. Arriva has made this change in response to requests from local residents wanting a direct service to the shops in Leigh.
