A newspaper article appeared last year following a debate that I had in the House of Commons concerning relations between the UK government and the Maldives. I am now in a position to correct the impression that was given. I did not raise the issues following a recent visit to the Maldives - the trip that I went on in fact took place in 2008 and before a change of government in the country. Sadly this story was repeated and libellous comments made without full knowledge of the facts.

David Amess MP has backed calls to protect children from sunbeds at a Cancer Research UK event in Parliament.

Yesterday the Southend West MP gave his support to a Private Member’s Bill to prevent under 18s from using sunbeds.

He was among dozens of MPs who heard how children raise their risk of skin cancer in later life by using sunbeds - recently upgraded to a top class carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

David Amess MP today visited Earls Hall Infant School and Earls Hall Junior School in Westcliff-on-Sea. The Southend West MP met with the Headteachers of both schools and was introduced to teachers, staff and pupils to hear more about the schools’ current activities. Mr Amess thoroughly enjoyed his visits and praised staff and pupils alike on their excellent work.

It beggars believe that no sooner have we started the new parliamentary session, there is yet another crisis in the Labour Party. Instead of concentrating on governing the country and trying to get us out of the present mess that we are in, members of the Labour Party continue to squabble between themselves about the position of their leader. The sooner we have a General Election the better.
