- Winston Churchill 20th August 1940
Mr Amess commented, “It is always an honour to attend the Southend Battle of Britain Service and Parade, to honour the 2,927 aircrew who courageously served in the RAF to defend Britain and those 544 aircrew who gave their lives, in one of the darkest periods of our history,” he added, “When I grew up in London there were constant reminders of the heroism of those who gave their lives all around us, and it is a pleasure to pay my respects once more.”
