On Sunday 10th July, the spectacular launch of the Alternative City of Culture 2017 took place at the Thames Estuary Yacht Club in Southend-on-Sea.
Southend has been declared as the Alternative City of Culture for 2017 and Sunday’s launch was an opportunity to showcase some of the exciting preparations that are taking place ahead of next year. The event was well attended and was supported by Deputy Mayor Faye Evans along with all those who are heavily involved in organising the celebratory events that will take place in 2017.
Representatives from the local cadet forces joined with art students from local schools and members of David Stanley’s Music Man Project to demonstrate the flourishing culture of the Southend community, before five magnificent stilt walkers brought the event to a close with a remarkable display.
Following the launch, Sir David said; “To be the Alternative City of Culture 2017 is a truly momentous accolade for Southend and we will certainly show that we are deserving of such a title with a variety of fabulous events showcasing our rich culture throughout the course of next year.”
