On Sunday 9th October 2016, Sir David Amess MP held his 11th Annual Centenarians’ Tea Party at Nazareth House in Southend-on-Sea which saw the largest gathering of centenarians this year in the UK! It was an afternoon of fun for all which included a sing-along to old war songs, a number of hits played by the excellent Salvation Army band, and even a few dances by some spritely centenarians. David Stanley, founder of the Music Man Project, and colleague Jenny Hitchcock wrote a special song for the occasion called ‘Now I’m Past 100’ as a tribute to those present while the talented singers Elizabeth Upsher and Elizabeth Dunlop sung away the afternoon.
Alongside the 15 extraordinary centenarians who attended – the oldest being a World War 2 veteran who was 105 – Sir David was delighted to welcome many local councillors, the Mayor of Southend and a number of dignitaries from the surrounding counties.
The afternoon was a true testament to the great work of the community in Southend with volunteers coming from the Leigh Lions, the Southend Round Table and Westcliff High School for Boys and transportation was generously provided by AC Taxis.
After such a successful and joyful afternoon made possible by so many people, not least the Sisters of Nazareth who welcomed everyone so kindly, Sir David looks forward to next year’s tea party – don’t forget to let us know if you know anyone who will be 100!
