David Amess MP attended an event in Leigh-on-Sea to celebrate 100 years of one of the most renowned primary schools in the local area. The original West Leigh School building was officially opened by the Mayor of Southend on the 13th September 1913, accommodating infant and junior aged students. The first headteacher was Mr. E. Hood. The growth of the school has taken place over many decades, with extensions to the buildings being completed in the 1920s, 1940s and 1950s.
Mr Amess commented, “It is a delight to come and celebrate the historical excellence of West Leigh Primary school,” he added, “The longevity of the school is a testament to the excellent staff that have always worked here at West Leigh; from the first Headmaster in 1913, Mr E. Hood, to the wonderful work that the present Headteacher, Mrs C Woolf does in making the school an exciting place for students to learn and aspire to do great things in their lives.”
