Sir David introduced the Specialist Printing and Materials (Offences) Act to Parliament in March 2015. The Bill created a new offence of knowingly providing specialist printing equipment to criminals who use it to forge identify papers, birth certificates and other documents.
Project Genesius, a unit of the Metropolitan Police have just announced their first successful prosecution under the new legislation, a foreign national who was buying goods online and supplying them to a gang producing counterfeit identity documents.
Sir David commented: " I am delighted that the legislation I brought forward has helped the police in the wonderful work they are doing to keep the public safe from identity theft. I congratulate the officers of Project Genesius and hope that the Bill continues to be useful in the fight against organised crime."
