Ahead of Parliament’s summer break, it is customary for an Adjournment debate to take place. HM Government had not initially planned for a Summer Adjournment debate, but following Sir David’s hardwork, it was restored to its rightful place on the ‘Order Paper’. The debate took place for over two hours on Thursday 25th July.
Sir David’s fourth and final contribution of the day was by far the most substantial, and although the Speaker limited speeches to 6 minutes, the Southend West MP was able to raise 23 issues of local and national significance.
Some of the national issues that Sir David raised included consumer debt and motorhome taxation. A number of local matters including the outstanding achievements of Darlinghurst Academy and Westcliff High School for Girls were also included in the speech.
