Sir David Amess joined in the celebrations of the Tamil New Years and Harvest festival at a special event on Sunday 13th January. Organised by the Southend Tamil Association, the event brought together communities to celebrate the Pongal festival. Guests were treated to an evening of cultural music and dance performance at Southend’s Skylark Hotel, and enjoyed a traditional Tamil buffet.
The event kicked off the celebrations for the four-day Thai Pongal festival, one of the most important festivals in the Tamil calendar. The Pongal festival celebrates the traditional Tamil harvest, and is a chance to come together to give thanks and reflect on the year ahead. Sir David said that he was delighted to join so many of Southend’s Tamil community in celebration and wished everyone a very happy and prosperous Pongal.
