David Amess MP has released the following statement:
Now that the local authority’s Planning Committee has approved the plans for the expansion of Southend Airport, it is now a matter entirely for the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, John Denham, to decide whether or not to call the plans in and for a public inquiry to be held.
In the build up to this meeting, I received letters from a whole range of constituents raising questions about these plans. Undoubtedly, whether residents are for or against the expansion, this is a crucial issue in terms of the town’s well being and its environment. I have always felt that such an important matter, which has far reaching consequences, would ultimately be best decided at a public inquiry where residents with a whole range of views about the proposals and all interested parties could be given an opportunity to express their views and have them judged through a truly independent mechanism.
