Southend West MP calls for a debate on illegal shellfish harvesting

On Thursday 16th July, Sir David Amess asked the Leader of the House, The Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, for a debate on illegal shellfish harvesting.

Recent reports of the illegal harvesting of shellfish off Southend’s coastline have raised concerns over the dangers of consuming illegally harvested shellfish and the safety of pickers operating in the mud along Southend seafront.

During Business Questions Sir David said to the Leader of the House, “He will recall only too well that 21 undocumented migrants lost their lives tragically in Morecambe Bay, somewhere I did a charity walk and it is very dangerous, and last year 39 people lost their lives being trafficked into Essex. Activity is going on off the coast of Southend illegally and I want to avoid another tragedy happening.”
