On Tuesday 23rd June, Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, asked the Minister of State for Social Care about plans to ensure care homes have access to Coronavirus home tests to keep our communities safe and healthy.
Sir David said “would she [the Minister of State for Social Care] confirm there is a rolling programme for COVID-19 in our care homes because very recently a care home in my constituency had a whole home test and they found someone was positive and they asked for another home test for everyone and were told by NHS England they now weren’t eligible. That can’t be right”.
Helen Whatley replied “when a care home has a new outbreak, either for the first time or when they have recovered from a previous outbreak, they should contact their local health protection team to arrange for initial testing for symptomatic residents to confirm the outbreak. Then the local health protection team or the director of public health can refer the care home to the testing team, the national testing team, so they can be prioritised for whole home testing”.
