On Friday 7th August, Sir David Amess, Member of Parliament for Southend West, visited Southend Hospital in his constituency. This was an excellent opportunity to see what the hospital has been doing during the coronavirus pandemic, and to thank all the hardworking staff for everything that they have been doing to keep local residents safe.
Sir David was accompanied on his visit by Anthony McKeever, Executive Lead Mid & South Essex Health and Care Partnership & Joint Accountable Officer for its 5 CCGs. They were joined by Denise Townsend, Director of Nursing and Tom Abell, Chief Transformation Officer and Deputy Chief Executive.
Observing social distancing at all times, Sir David visited the A&E Department, the oncology and orthopaedic units, and the coronary care unit.
The visit allowed Sir David the opportunity to talk with managers and staff at the hospital, and to see how they have been dealing with the challenges caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The visit also allowed Sir David to learn more of the problems faced in particular by the Accident & Emergency Department.
Commenting after his visit, Sir David said: “I was delighted to visit Southend Hospital on Friday. I visited the A&E Department, and was pleased to see the way residents presenting themselves for treatment were being dealt with. I plead with everyone – A&E is not a substitute for visiting your GP – it is a service meant for those people in need of urgent medical assistance. The irony is that some people turn up for treatment unnecessarily, whereas those such as the elderly have been more reluctant to do so during the pandemic. I visited the oncology unit to see the brilliant work that is being done there, and I also pay tribute to our orthopaedic team who have again continued to offer a service throughout the pandemic. My visit to the coronary care unit again left me impressed with how well the team are dealing with those who need critical care. I want to thank all the staff at Southend Hospital for the work they do to keep local residents and their families safe and healthy.”
