The Southend West MP has welcomed an extra £23 million funding increase for Essex Police in 2019. Sir David met with the Home Secretary Sajid Javid to discuss the cash boost as part of the 2019 police funding settlement. Nationally, the investment will see the largest police funding increase since 2010.
Under the settlement, Essex Police will be receiving a £3million increase in Government grant funding and a further grant of £2.9 million to help pay police pensions. Additional flexibility to Police and Crime Commissioners to raise the local precept could raise up to an extra £17 million a year.
The news follows a series of meetings Sir David and fellow Essex MPs had with Policing Minister, Nick Hurd, to call for greater investment in Essex policing. Sir David said ‘This is fantastic news for policing in our local area. The investment will make a huge impact on improving policing in Southend, and ensuring we get more officers on our streets.’
