On Wednesday 28 October, Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, and Cllr Helen Boyd visited the ‘Baby 2020’ Group being run at Prince Avenue School.
Baby 2020 is a group that was set up at the Southend Children’s Centre for new parents, with children born during the lockdown, to socialise and support one another. During the lockdown new parents were not able to have face-to-face contact with family, friends or other new parents, and many mothers were forced to give birth alone. Baby 2020 provides weekly one-hour sessions ranging from sensory experiences to musical instruments and painting, where babies and new parents can come together. Attendees of the sessions have described how beneficial the classes have been at an especially difficult time for new parents.
Southend Children’s Centres provide a range of other activities for families throughout the school term and holidays. For more information visit their website: https://www.family-action.org.uk/
Following the visit Sir David said, “I was absolutely delighted to visit the Baby 2020 class this morning and speak to those who run the sessions as well as the new mothers. This year has been difficult for everyone, but especially for new parents who have often been forced to face experiences alone and am so pleased that Family Action is providing a place for them to support one another. I would especially like to thank Jo for organising the visit and for all the work that she is doing for families in Southend.”
