Sir David Amess hosts Southend Salutes its Veterans: VE Day Concert

On Friday 8th May Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, hosted a virtual VE Day concert with local performers in honour of the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and to remember all those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom.

In order to celebrate VE Day this year, a virtual celebration was necessary. Sir David organised and hosted a concert showcasing the wonderful talent we have here in Southend. The concert starts with The Mayor of Southend, Councillor John Lamb, and his wife commemorating the celebration of the Victory in Europe.

Sir David pays his tributes to our veterans and their sacrifices they made so we are able to live in a democracy today. The concert was streamed live on YouTube on Friday so many people could enjoy watching it with their family and friends despite not being able to be physically together. The concert benefits from both live performances on Friday and recordings that musicians and singers made especially for the VE Day Concert.

Sir David said “The reason we held it is that at this moment when we are in the middle of a national crisis, 75 years ago men and women working together demonstrated that they could defeat and overcome the most terrible of all enemies. Well today, we face an invisible enemy and by working together we will also overcome that”.

Southend has such talented musicians and it was great to hear from soloists, pianists, choirs and many more. Special performances we all enjoyed were from Lee Mead, Joe Palmer, Patti Boulaye and David Stanley and The Music Man Project. Sir David is very thankful for everyone’s enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the concert and for joining together in a time of lockdown to be thankful for our heroes.

Sir David finished the concert by saying “it was a fitting tribute to our veterans ... and I would like to thank our wonderful artists who have given up their time at no cost whatsoever and have entertained us all so well. They are so very talented and I would like to thank each and every one of you who has viewed this concert”.

The concert is available to watch on Sir David’s YouTube channel by either searching “Southend Salutes its Veterans: VE Day Concert” or “Sir David Amess MP channel” into YouTube. Sir David hopes everybody will enjoy watching and listening to the beautiful music coming from Southend which celebrates our veterans.
