On Thursday 11th October, Sir David visited Westcliff High School for Girls to present the prestigious Jack Petchey Award to Year 10 pupil Erin Stoner.
The MP for Southend West was delighted to congratulate Erin who wowed a packed audience at the Cambridge Theatre during the final of Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge in July. The Year 10 student competed against 15 other finalists, who had been whittled down from 19,800 children in 505 schools. Erin’s piece, ‘A Speech for Speech’, focused on her determination to overcome her stutter.
The competition was judged by a number of high-profile journalists, business people and celebrities known for their first-class communication including Sky News political editor Faisal Island and Her Majesty’s chief inspector Amanda Spielman.
As a result of her triumph, Erin was awarded £2,000 for herself and £3,000 for WHSG at a school assembly
