On Monday 10th April Sir David visited POPPIES: Wave on Barge Pier, Shoeburyness. POPPIES: Wave is one of two sculptures by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper originally seen as part of the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at HM Tower of London in 2014 where 888,246 poppies were displayed to honour every death in the British and Colonial forces of the First World War. The sculpture on Barge Pier, Gunners Park, will be on display until 25th June for the public to view.
The local MP said:
“What a remarkable job Paul Cummins and Tom Piper have done with this superb sculpture in Southend. The display at the Tower of London was inspiring to all who were lucky enough to view it therefore I am glad that those from Southend who didn’t get to see the tribute will be able to see this new rendition in their own town. Viewing this sculpture puts the vast sacrifice that our ancestors made into perspective and I encourage everyone to find the time to visit this fantastic display.”
