Everyone should be ‘diabetes aware’ says Sir David Amess MP

The Southend West MP marked Diabetes Awareness Day 2018 by highlighting the importance of everyone knowing their diabetes risk and how to prevent it. On Wednesday 31st October, Sir David himself took the opportunity to have his own diabetes risk factors checked through blood sugar testing.

Type 2 diabetes is the fastest-growing health threat facing the UK, and is now nearly three times as common as cancer. Diabetes is a serious condition, but if well managed, people living with the condition can live a long and health life. Many people, however, do not receive adequate care; nearly two thirds of people with type 2 diabetes are not currently meeting treatment targets.

Sir David said, ‘By 2034, around 1 in 10 people in the UK will develop type 2 diabetes. It is crucial that everyone is aware of their own risk and how to reduce it. Ensuring that those currently living with diabetes are aware of the symptoms and impact of the condition is key to ensuring that everyone receives the best treatment.’
